YOUR FIRST CLASS

Before your first class, please ensure that you are properly hydrated. Try to drink plenty of water the day/evening before class. Your first class will primarily be an exercise in adjusting to the heated studio. Adequate hydration will help significantly.

Refrain from eating for 1-3 hours before class. If necessary, eat light, easily digestable foods.

Bring a yoga mat, a large towel and a bottle of water. We offer these items for sale/rent at the studio for your convenience.

Wear snug-fitting, light weight clothing, preferably of a wicking fabric. You will sweat a great deal and this will help to keep you cool. Women usually wear sport tops and yoga shorts. Men wear yoga/workout shorts or swimsuits.

Please be sure to inform the instructor of any pertinent injuries or illnesses so that he or she may show you any necessary modifications to postures.

All classes are 90 minutes long. First-timers must arrive 15-20 minutes early.

Note: You will notice that Emily and her teachers and most of her experienced students do no drink water in class. Most of the people who have water bottles in class are visiting from other schools.

Don’t feel guilty or confused. Nobody is going to yell at you if you sip your water. These are some of the reasons why we don’t drink water. The first reason is this is a yoga class and not a gym workout. Holding still in the posture. Holding still not in the posture. Mouth closed. Breathing through the nose. Normal breathing. That’s it. Drink plenty of water before and after class. And while you are in class focus on the one thing that makes a yoga class a yoga class...your breath. The better you are at breathing you will not suffer through heat or cold.

We require everyone to stay still and on their yoga mats at all times in the yoga room.

We do not allow hand towels in our schools. The beauty of Bikram Yoga is that we don’t use props. All you need is your self. Your body has creative intelligence if you only allow the body to figure things out slipping and sliding and learning how not to.
